Karate Basics
Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that focuses on self-defense using strikes, blocks, and stances. It emphasizes discipline, respect, and physical fitness.
1. Basic Stances (Dachi)
Stances provide balance and power in attacks and defenses.
- Heisoku Dachi – Feet together stance (ready position)
- Zenkutsu Dachi – Front stance (strong forward position)
- Kiba Dachi – Horse stance (for stability and power)
- Kokutsu Dachi – Back stance (used for defensive movements)
2. Basic Punches (Tsuki)
- Oi-zuki (Lunge Punch) – A powerful punch moving forward
- Gyaku-zuki (Reverse Punch) – Punch with the rear hand for extra power
- Kizami-zuki (Jab Punch) – A quick lead-hand punch
- Uraken (Backfist Strike) – A strike using the back of the fist
3. Basic Blocks (Uke)
- Age Uke – Rising block (to defend against head strikes)
- Gedan Barai – Downward block (to stop low attacks)
- Uchi Uke – Inside block (to block attacks from the side)
- Soto Uke – Outside block (to deflect strikes away)
4. Basic Kicks (Geri)
- Mae Geri (Front Kick) – A straight kick for attacking the midsection
- Yoko Geri (Side Kick) – A powerful kick delivered from the side
- Mawashi Geri (Roundhouse Kick) – A circular kick targeting the head or body
- Ushiro Geri (Back Kick) – A kick directed behind for counterattacks
5. Kata (Forms)
Kata is a sequence of movements that combine strikes, blocks, and stances in a structured pattern. Practicing kata improves technique, balance, and focus.
6. Kumite (Sparring)
Kumite is practice fighting, where students apply techniques against an opponent in a controlled setting.
